Caps announce return of Baltimore Hockey Classic

After the 2012 edition was canceled due to the NHL lockout, the Baltimore Hockey Classic is returning for 2013.

That was the word out of Washington on Friday as the Capitals announced they’d be playing an exhibition game against the Boston Bruins on Wednesday, Sept. 17 at 1st Mariner Arena in Baltimore.

“Baltimore is a great hockey market with a long hockey tradition and we are excited to make our return to 1st Mariner Arena next season,” said Capitals president Dick Patrick.

The first Classic occurred in 2011, when the Caps took on the Predators in front of a capacity crown of 11,082.

Ice hockey will return to 1st Mariner Arena when the Washington Capitals take on the Boston Bruins for the second Baltimore Hockey Classic. The game will be held at 7 p.m. Sept. 17, 2013, 1st Mariner Arena/SMG general manager Frank Remesch and Baltimore City Council President Bernard C. “Jack” Young announced April 26.

The inaugural Baltimore Hockey Classic was between the Capitals and the Nashville Predators in front of a sold-out crowd of 11,082 hockey fans. There was a Baltimore Hockey Classic planned for 2012, but it was canceled because of the NHL lockout. The 2011 classic was the first professional hockey game in Baltimore since 1997.

1st Mariner Arena will host the second Baltimore Hockey Classic next fall when the Washington Capitals play the Boston Bruins in an NHL preseason game on Sept. 17 at 7 p.m.

“The Bruins coming to town makes this a special event,” said Frank Remesch, general manager of 1st Mariner Arena. “That same night, the Orioles play the Red Sox, which adds to the spice. People can root against Boston twice.”
